As we increase the number of opportunities available in our community, the more significant our impact becomes. This past year we have invested in our communities by offering opportunities for growth that will enhance the quality of life in Kankakee and Iroquois Counties today and for future generations.
As we conceived the idea of introducing a CEO Program to our region, our goal was to spotlight local businesses, organizations, and their leaders for our high school juniors and seniors. Our aim was to inspire these students to embrace an entrepreneurial mindset in their thinking, work ethic, and actions. The overwhelming support of local businesses and numerous eye-opening moments encountered by these students far exceeded our initial expectations.
“I’ve had success in a traditional academic setting, but this year I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone. CEO has allowed that in ways that I couldn’t in a regular academic environment,” stated James Bretzlaff, Kankakee County CEO participant. “The main thing I’ve enjoyed while in CEO is getting to learn about all the opportunities that are inherent to this area. While in school, I did not get to experience the diversity of business in Kankakee County. I didn’t know there was so much opportunity here, but now that I’m seeing it, I’m so excited to keep exploring it with my classmates and facilitator,” says James.
It is moments such as these that continue to inspire me to do the great work of the Community Foundation. We established a Board Bootcamp with the first cohort starting in January to train community members who are interested in serving on nonprofit boards, empowering them to be leaders of change in our community. I dream of starting a Youth in Philanthropy group for our junior high and high school students, to inspire the next generation of philanthropists. These endeavors are vital to achieve the growth and development we aspire to witness within our communities.
